Adware and Spyware

Without your knowledge, unwanted types of software called Adware and Spyware (collectively "malware") can be installed on your computer as you browse the internet or install downloaded software. This can happen when you download freeware or perhaps when you unwittingly click on an image or the close-window [x] of a pop-up.

Adware is irritating and manifests itself by intrusive advertising, pop-ups or the hijacking of your home page. It is not normally dangerous but can trap information about your browsing activity and sell this to advertisers.

Spyware is a more serious threat as it can record your keystrokes, logging private information such as passwords or even credit card details.

There are a number of free software programs which will remove Spyware/malware from your computer, as well as the features increasingly included in commercial anti-virus/security products. Visit the websites below to learn more and download the software:

      Malwarebytes

      Ccleaner

      Adaware

      Superantispyware

      Spybot: Search and Destroy

      Microsoft Defender

      Microsoft Security Essentials

As with anti-virus programs, it is essential to keep this software up-to-date. This is often done by running the program and choosing to check for updates.

Be aware that not all malware-removal programs advertised on the Internet are equally good, some are more polish than function and some malware either masquerades as, or comes with, less legitimate detection & removal tools. (Spyware Warrior attempts to compare available products and highlight rogue products.)

See OUCS Adware/Spyware web pages for more information, particularly the advice on how to prevent malware being installed on your computer.
