Accommodation

The College has approximately 300 rooms on its main site the majority of which are allocated to undergraduate with the remainder being allocated to fresher graduates. There are a further 147 rooms at ‘Merifield’, the College’s modern development of shared flats in Summertown, just over one mile north of the College. All rooms on the main College site are either single or double sets (two single bedrooms with a large shared sitting room) and each has a telephone and free internet connection. There are also a number of small kitchens for personal use, a central laundrette, and cycle storage facilities. At Merifield the accommodation is in four or five-bedroom flats, and there are four two-bedroom flats for couples. All the five-bedroom and some of the four-bedroom flats have two bathrooms. Again, each flat has telephone and internet connections and there is a central laundrette, computer printing facilities and ample cycle storage.

All undergraduates live on the main College site in their first year and can normally return to College accommodation for at least one further year. Students reading four-year courses with split finals are accommodated on the main site for one of their two final years, and are also guaranteed accommodation at Merifield for whichever of the two final years they are not accomodated in College. Any rooms remaining at Merifield are allocated by ballot. Where possible, new graduates are accommodated according to preference, either in Merifield or in College. However the number of rooms available in Collegevaries and may be limited in some years.

When not living in College accommodation, undergraduate and graduate students can apply for a grant to help with the costs of private accommodation (currently £320 per year).

The College welcomes students with disabilities. Students with specific accommodation requirements are advised to contact the College’s Domestic Bursar (domestic.bursar@wadh.ox.ac.uk) for further details of facilities.

Charges

Rooms on the main College site are charged termly; the charges include dinner, heat and electricity (rents at Merifield do not include dinner). Vacation residence is normally available but preference is given to finalists and students from overseas. Undergraduates living at Merifield have 9-month contracts which run from October to June, although students may, if they wish, stay on at Merifield during the summer vacation. Graduate contracts are for 11 months, from October to August. If extended residence is not requested, rooms generally have to be cleared during the vacations. Any additional periods of residence are charged per day, but some grants are available to support students who need to stay on. For details of charges for the current academic year please click here.

Dining

During term, dinner for all students on the main College site is in Hall or in the Refectory. It is an informal occasion to which friends from outside may be invited. Students living out, either at Merifield or in private accommodation, may also have meals in College. All meals are charged at subsidised prices. From Monday to Friday during term, breakfast and lunch are available à la carte to students living in or out, with brunch available on Saturdays. For all meals, arrangements are available for vegetarian, vegan and other dietary needs.

All Merifield flats have fully fitted kitchens with lounge/dining rooms, and there are a number of student kitchens on the main College site for individual use. There is at least one student guest nights each term, where students are encouraged to invite guests for more formal dining occasions.
