'Choosing an Oxford college as an international student may seem like a daunting and complicated process. Overawed by the illustrious histories of the colleges, confused by the very particular terminology surrounding them, and unfamiliar with their role and importance within the university structure, I recall it being very difficult to determine where I should elect to spend my time as a graduate student.
In making a positive decision to come to Wadham, I remember that my thinking was strongly influenced by a colourful, student-produced publication mailed to me in Melbourne, Australia. Its pages reflected a college that is relaxed and informal but with a cherished history and excellent academic record. Through articles, photographs and a lively calendar of college events, I gleaned something of a community that is open-minded, politically progressive and socially mixed.
Four years later, these initial impressions have been not only confirmed but far surpassed and I easily wax-lyrical about wonderful Wadham and the happy time I continue to have here. Academically I have found a dynamic, stimulating and diverse intellectual environment in which to discuss ideas, learn about other disciplines, and develop my own thinking with the encouragement and support of my peers and Fellows. However this is not only a scholarly community, but one with a lively and active social, cultural and spiritual life that encompasses students from all backgrounds and nationalities. The graduate community (or MCR) at Wadham is renown in Oxford circles as being particularly friendly and diverse, and for me has been a means of not only integrating into British life but making friends that will last a lifetime. Under the watchful eyes of its founders, Dorothy and Nicholas - whose statues grace the main quad - Wadham has welcomed generations of students, me included, who find a home and haven within its walls for negotiating the joys and challenges of Oxford student life.'
