Conditional Offers

Most of our applicants apply at the start of their final year at school or college. Of these, most will be UK students preparing to take A-levels, Advanced Highers, or the International Baccalaureate, but there is considerable variation. Students following comparable courses are considered on equal terms: common courses include the European and French Baccalaureates, the Abitur, and the Irish Leaving Certificate. Successful applicants are offered places conditional on A-level or other examination grades (a typical offer would be AAA at A-Level, excluding General Studies). The offers are intended to set high, but realistic, goals and we assume most conditional offers will be met.

Unconditional Offers

Applications are also welcome from students who have already taken their school/college examinations. Successful applicants are usually given unconditional offers (although, in a few cases, conditions may be attached to any further examinations the applicant plans to take). Generally speaking, successful applicants have achieved high grades (the equivalent of AAA or higher at A-level). However, examination performance is only one element in the assessment.

Open Offers

A few applicants may receive an 'Open Offer'. This means that they will definitely be awarded a place if they meet the conditions set, but the college to which they are allocated will depend on where spaces become available after examination results are published in the summer.

English Language Requirements

All teaching at the University of Oxford is carried out in English and tutors must be convinced that you have sufficient fluency in written and spoken English to cope with your course from the start.  Therefore, all non-native English-speaking applicants (other than those who have been educated in the medium of English language during their two most recent years of study) must satisfy the University's English Language requirements as part of an offer.
