Admissions Wadham admits around two students each year to read for the degree of Economics and Management. The subject provides an excellent opportunity to combine the study of economics with a range of subjects in management studies. Entry to Economics and Management is highly competitive but also very open. In addition to proven academic ability, admitting tutors look for potential, motivation and commitment to your proposed studies in Oxford. The Course In the first year of the course three compulsory subjects are taken in Introductory Economics, Mathematics and Statistics for Economics and Management, and Introduction to Management. This leads to a pass/fail examination at the end of the first year. In the second and third years two compulsory papers are taken in economics, along with two papers in management. A further four papers are chosen from a very wide range of optional subjects, leading to a final examination at the end of the third year. Teaching Structure Teaching is organised into college tutorials and university lectures and classes at the Department of Economics and the School of Management Studies (the Saïd Business School). The College has two Fellows in Economics in residence, Dr Alan Beggs and another in process of being appointed, who are responsible for the economics component of the degree. The Fellow in Management Studies, Dr Oren Sussman, is responsible for this aspect of the course. Graduates in Economics and Management have open to them a wide range of career opportunities in, for example, banking and financial services, management consultancy, international and multinational organisations. Interested graduates may also be able to further their studies at graduate level at the Saïd Business School or with the department of Economics. I chose to study Economics and Management because I wanted to understand how the world works and have a hand in changing it for the better. The subject is more relevant in today's turbulent world than it has ever been, and the topics we cover are not only intriguing but also very topical. Before applying to Wadham, my knowledge of economics was very limited and I felt that I would be very much thrown in the deep end. However, I was pleasantly surprised with the tutorial system, as discussions within tutorials maintained by enthusiasm for the subject and I found the course structure helped build my confidence step by step. Tutorials are great as you are encouraged to think for yourself and justify your arguments, something that I found they looked for in interviews. In terms of the course, you learn the basics of the theory in your first year and then you can choose a wide variety of options to study in your second and third year. Although Economics & Management has excellent career prospects for a job in top companies and the city, it is also quite versatile and can lead to career prospects in international development, the public sector and even charity.
I was recommended Wadham college by someone who studied here a few decades ago. She told me it was a beautiful place, with a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. It still hasn't changed. The community at Wadham is liberal and accepting of people from any background. It's balanced atmosphere has allowed me to pursue other activities such as being Freshers Rep, playing college football and using the excellent music facilities to practice piano. Being at Wadham has overturned my expectations about Oxford that I would be having parties in the library, as there are plenty of things to do such as making costumes for the fortnightly 'Bops' that are a barrel of laughs. From someone who a couple of years ago would never have thought of even applying to Oxford, I would greatly recommend my course and college as one of most exciting and interesting to apply for!
