WAGS - Wadham Alumni Golf Society
Wadham runs an informal golf society for alumni (male and female) through which we participate in two events each year – the Whitby Cup and the Intercollegiate Competition.
The Whitby Cup
The Whitby Cup, a fine trophy kindly donated by the college, is open to all past and present members of Wadham, including staff and fellows. The 2016 event was held at The Temple Golf Club and followed by dinner in College. The best score of the day went to John Ford (1996, PPE). The 2017 Whitby Cup will take place on Friday 22 September at Temple Golf Club near Maidenhead, followed by dinner in College.

Wadham Alumni Golf Society (WAGS) member Richard Chapman reports on a successful day of golf:
“This year’s playing of the Whitby Cup (open to all connected with Wadham) was at The Temple Golf Club near Maidenhead on the beautiful Autumn we always order for the Whitby Cup. A very enjoyable day was consequently spent by all – irrespective of whether they felt they had done justice to a very picturesque course.
One quirky benefit of timing of the day was that the haymakers had just visited the course so there was no rough. The downside was that the neat lines of mown hay waiting to be baled constituted a magnet for balls although the rules of the competition were fixed so the mowings were 'ground under repair'. We we learned a strange side effect of hay from golf courses which is that it cannot be fed to animals in case they swallow one of our errant lost balls.
We then returned to College for drinks on the balcony of Hall and dinner in the Trapp Room. We were fortunate that the date again coincided with a Gaudy so we were able to share in their food and wine menu, which was exceptional.
The best score of the day went to John Ford, (PPE, 1976) who therefore gets his name on the Whitby Cup for the second time. Runner up, on count back over Emeritus Fellow Mike Sauvage, was Martin Cofield, the head groundsman. John and Martin both received a very fine bottle of wine from the cellars for which many thanks to the development office. Jim Congleton (1984, Physics) won the nearest the pin prize and had the luxury of being able to buy his own bottle of wine from Waitrose with the balance of the prize fund.
The Whitby Cup day remains one of the most sociable and enjoyable on the alumni calendar so please contact the development office if you would like to play in the 2017 event on 22 September”
The Intercollegiate Competition
The Intercollegiate Competition is held each year at Frilford Heath Golf Club and around 20 colleges compete in teams of 10. For this competition the organisers specify a handicap limit of 20 but they are happy for higher handicappers to participate off a restricted handicap. Somewhat to our surprise, but with great happiness, Wadham won this event in 2013 and now we are usually in the top half dozen. The 2017 competition will be held at Frilford on Friday 21 April.
If you would like to participate in either of these two events please contact email@example.com. The Whitby Cup is open to golfers of all handicap levels but the Intercollegiate event is subject to the handicap restriction mentioned above. We would be very pleased to see more alumni and more alumnae participating – both at the relaxed (Wadham-only) Whitby Cup and at the collegiate event where alumna Jane Powell is a stalwart of our team and was a member of the 2013 winning side.
Whether or not you can make the 2015 events please do make contact if you are a golfer so that you can receive our occasional bulletins about Wadham golf events.
