Dr Susan Burge, OBE BSc (Bristol) BM BCh (Oxon) DM (Oxon) FRCP was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland and completed preclinical studies in Bristol, where she intercalated a degree in physiology, before moving to Oxford for clinical studies.  She was one of the first flexible (part-time) trainees in dermatology and this enabled her to combine raising a family (both children are also doctors) with research (completing a DM) as well as her clinical training.

Research interests
  • Hailey-Hailey disease & Darier disease: clinical and experimental work on Darier disease and Hailey-Hailey disease formed the basis of a DM thesis. In collaboration with other UK groups, the genes for Darier disease and Hailey-Hailey disease were identified. Functional studies performed on the proteins encoded by these genes provided novel information about the role of ATPase-powered calcium pumps in the regulation of cell-cell adhesion and differentiation in the epidermis.
  • Medical Education: a Delphi study informed the recommendations for dermatology in the undergraduate curriculum circulated to all UK medical schools in 2006.
Courses
Founder and Director of annual 2-day course: "Learning, Teaching and Assessment in Dermatology”
