Professor Nicholas Woodhouse, MA (MSc, PhD Lond). I am a University Lecturer in Mathematics (with the title of Professor), and a tutorial fellow of Wadham College. I was an undergraduate at Oxford, and returned in 1977 after writing a Ph.D. in the Mathematics Department at King's College, London (under the supervision of F A E Pirani) and spending a brief period as a postdoc in the Physics Department at Princeton, working for J A Wheeler. In Oxford, I worked as a member of Roger Penrose's research group. I am currently Chairman of Mathematics. I am also Treasurer of the London Mathematical Society. Much of my past research is contained in two monographs (both published by Oxford University Press): Geometric quantization (paperback edition, 1997); and Integrability, self-duality, and twistor theory (with L.J. Mason, 1996). I have also written three undergraduate textbooks: Special relativity and General relativity (in the Springer SUMS series); and Introduction to analytical dynamics, (OUP, 1985.  A new edition will appear soon.)

Research Interests
Mathematical physics, particularly applications of geometry to physics. My focus has moved over the years from general relativity and geometric quantization, in which I still have a strong interest, to integrable systems and applications of twistor theory.

Courses Taught
Relativity and quantum theory at undergraduate and graduate levels. Integrable systems and twistor theory. Various standard first- and second-year undergraduate courses in applied mathematics.

Current Project
Solutions to the isomonodromy problem.

Research Group
Mathematical physics group.

Members of research team
Currently I have one research student (Mitul Shah).
