Funding top quality teaching and research at Wadham

As part of the University of Oxford we benefit from centralised funding for the majority of our posts.  Depending on the nature of the post, we are required to contribute between 20% and 65% of the full cost.  Despite this underpinning, the total capital cost to Wadham of endowing all our teaching posts is still over £41 million of which £11 million is already in place.  During this campaign we are seeking to raise half of the remaining £30 million required. Currently the College covers these costs on a year-to-year basis from revenue and with decreasing Government funding, this is no longer a viable strategy.  With budgets stretched in most areas of study, especially the Humanities, there is an urgent need to secure as much funding as we possibly can to maintain and ensure the quality of teaching at Wadham.

Therefore Wadham aims to secure endowed funds for each of its 18 subjects. Each subject fund is vital to maintaining the health of that subject.  Donations to these funds will be ring-fenced within the College’s endowment to ensure that the income is spent on the subject for which the money was intended.  The priority for each fund will be to support the current posts; it will then provide the opportunity to expand and enhance resources once core funding is secured. For example,

ENGINEERING requires over £2m to support the teaching of three Fellows, and thanks to the generosity of three major donors and other contributions almost one quarter of that funding has been committed.

ENGLISH is a popular subject which requires two Fellows plus additional teaching support and therefore requires a fund of £4m. To date no funding has been secured.

HISTORY requires a fund of £4m of which almost £1m is in place.  The current funds were mainly secured due to the work of Pat Thompson, much loved tutor in modern history who died in 2009.

LAW - Due to the very successful campaign to support the Hackney Fellowship in Law and generous support from the Wadham College Law Society and other major donors, we have secured 50% of the £4m required for the Law fund.

MATHEMATICS has benefitted from a benefaction which has provided 20% of the £2.5m required to support that subject.

MODERN LANGUAGES (French and German) requires a fund of more than £2m and approximately 20% is in place.

PHILOSOPHY requires a fund of £3m and is currently without any significant funding.

Similar needs exist in Biology, Chemistry, Economics, Management, Medicine, Oriental Studies, Philosophy, Physics, Politics and Psychology.  Further information on each subject is available and we welcome discussions with individuals who would like to help.

In creating subject funds and securing the future of all subjects we will continue to contribute to world class research and discovery, and preserve the excellence of tutorial teaching at the College.

If you would like to help support these ambitions, you can make a donation online, by downloading a Donation form, or alternatively you can make a regular donation by visiting the University's Wadham site.
