To protect our historic buildings and invest in new buildings and facilities
We have exciting plans for the major refurbishment of staircases and new buildings, the funding of which can not be met from existing resources. Our current plans include: Main Quad The South Range received extensive renovations at a cost of over £5m which is not yet fully funded. This important work included the upgrading of student accommodation and the creation of en-suites for all bedrooms; external repair and refurbishment including re-roofing; the refurbishment of the panelled room to be named in honour of Jeremy Knowles, the creation of a modern seminar room and our splendid new Lodge. In order to complete the refurbishment of the Main Quad we need to we now need to turn our attention to the North Range (staircases 1, 2, and 3). We have plans to refurbish the building, repair the roof and provide much needed student en-suite accommodation. Plans are being developed and initial costings total almost £5m. The McCall MacBain Graduate Centre This will be housed in former Blackwells Music Shop in Holywell Street. This is an important listed building designed by the Scottish firm of architects Gillespie Kidd Coia. Its conversion into a graduate centre will provide some of the best student facilities in Oxford. The project will cost £3.4m and thanks to a generous donation from the McCall MacBains we now need to find less than half the required funding. Naming opportunities are offered for donations of £100,000 or more. Staircase 9 One of the prettiest buildings on site, and thought to be to a design by Sir Christopher Wren, is in urgent need of renovation. Plans are currently being developed and the College will offer a donor who steps forward with significant funding the chance to name the building. The cost of this renovation will be approximately £2m. Goddard Building The redevelopment of the 1950’s Goddard Building (staircases 16 and 17) is in early stages of consideration. The building currently comprises 24 single sets with shared bathrooms. The potential to extend the building with an additional floor and a new mansard roof would result in a total of 34 en-suite bedrooms. Costs are estimated at £3m. Additional plans are currently being developed for phase two of our Campaign. These building projects will provide outstanding resources for Wadham’s community of scholars today, and in the years ahead.
