What does it take to write a good political speech and how do you become a speechwriter to the White House? Wadham alumna Lissa Muscatine shares her experience as White House and State Department speechwriter and senior advisor to Hillary Clinton during the 2008 Democratic Party leadership campaign.

Lissa Muscatine (1977 European Politics) outlines her experience of life in the White House and the Obama/Clinton battle for leadership of the Democratic party in 2008, looking ahead to the 2016 presidential election.

Following a prominent career in journalism, Lissa most recently served in the Obama Administration as Director of Speechwriting and Senior Advisor to Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton. She was a senior advisor on Mrs Clinton’s presidential campaign and was co-collaborator on her White House memoir Living History. During the Clinton Administration, Lissa served as a Presidential Speechwriter, and later as Director of Communications to the First Lady.

Lissa is currently co-owner of the illustrious independent bookshop Politics and Prose in Washington DC with her husband Bradley Graham.
