The endowment of The Jeffrey Hackney Fellowship in Law has been made possible by a series of donations from St Edmund Hall alumni, and has now been completed by a munificent major donation from one of Jeffrey’s former students.
Commenting on the announcement, Jeffrey Hackney said: “I am overwhelmed with gratitude at the news of this wonderful gift to secure the teaching of law at St Edmund Hall and offer my public thanks to all those former students who have contributed, especially to the principal donor, who, though he wishes to remain anonymous has to my very great pleasure allowed me to know his name. In these hard times, expressions of support from this group are specially heart-warming and specially so to me, since teaching has been the most pleasurable aspect of my professional life and it is good to know that despite the often irrefragable contrary evidence at the time, it is believed to have had some effect. Floreat Aula.”
Jeffrey Hackney came to Wadham as a law student in 1959. He left in 1962 to pursue historical studies at UCL but returned in 1963 to do the BCL. He became Tutorial Fellow in Law at St Edmund Hall from 1964-76 and worked as Librarian and Senior Tutor. As Librarian he was instrumental in converting the disused church of St Peter-in-the-East into the college’s new library, and a ‘grotesque’ in his image adorns the top of the tower. Jeffrey was Senior Tutor at St Edmund Hall when Wadham’s Warden, Ken Macdonald QC, was a student there. Jeffrey returned to Wadham as Tutorial Fellow in Law in 1976 and is now an Emeritus Fellow at both Colleges. He recently took up the role of archivist at Wadham.
The Jeffrey Hackney Fellowship in Law at St Edmund Hall is currently held by Aileen Kavanagh DPhil, (BCL, MA NUI), Magister Legum Europae (Hanover), DIPL (Vienna).
At Wadham, the extraordinary generosity of our alumni and friends has funded a Hackney Fellowship in Law and, more recently, two Hackney BCL scholars. Tarunabh Khaitan became the Hackney Fellow in Law in August 2012. Shiva Yelamanchili (BCL, 2016) and Rabah Kherbane (BCL, 2016) were awarded Hackney BCL scholarships in 2016. Wadham would like to thank all alumni and friends who have so generously supported this post and scholarships.
