‘The Professor Is In’ – Dr Karen Kelsky debated the ups and downs of an academic career in the US, in discussion with MCR members at a recent Research Associate-organised event.

Karen, a former tenured professor and department head at the University of Oregon, is the Founder and President of The Professor Is In, which provides advice and consulting services on the academic job search and all elements of academic and post-academic careers. As part of a tour of universities in Ireland and the UK, Karen joined Wadham graduates this intimate event.

Answering a series of pressing questions from MCR members, Karen gave a warts-and-all experience-based perspective on the realities of the US academic job market, noting the huge differences between different institutions and sharing a range of practical tips on how to make the best impression in a crowded and shrinking marketplace. The graduates present in the audience responded eagerly to her challenge to think like a recruitment committee and to recognise the common mistakes made on CVs, cover letters, and at interview, and went away feeling much better-equipped for potential opportunities across the Atlantic.
