Wadham-Sarah Lawrence Exchange Programme

Each year, a small number of Wadham students are selected to go on exchange, spending nearly three weeks during the spring vacation at Sarah Lawrence College in New York.  Wadham students take classes at Sarah Lawrence, while working on a specific project of their choice. These projects should be based on individual interest, and not necessarily related to the student course of study. We are looking for creative, well thought through projects, which are able to be managed productively within the time period. Wadham students will live in dorms or houses with Sarah Lawrence students, in order to mix and integrate into College life, experiencing liberal arts education. There are also many opportunities for travel and visits to New York City, which is only 15 miles from Sarah Lawrence College.

The New York Exchange is a compliment to the Wadham College Visiting Student Programme, one of the oldest study programmes abroad programmes in Oxford, where each year Wadham accepts up to 30 students from top US liberal arts colleges under the auspices of the Sarah Lawrence at Oxford Programme.

The exchange will take place from 1 April - 18 April 2012.   Airfare costs to and from New York, and room and board at Sarah Lawrence College are provided, as well as a contribution to spending money.

Applications are due in by 19 January 2012.  Candidates will be short listed and interviews held shortly thereafter.  Preference will be given to students who are returning to Oxford next year, as they will then be able to assist with the integration component of the Exchange.  The application form is available here.

Selection will be based on two criteria: the viability and potential of the study project, as well as the suitability of the candidate to serve as an ambassador.  We are looking for students who will both represent Wadham well in New York and help to integrate the Sarah Lawrence programme into Oxford.  If accepted, you will be expected to present your experience during the Trinity term Exchange Evening, and in a written report; you will help plan the welcome for next year's Sarah Lawrence students, and assist them with their integration into Wadham.

It is a wonderful adventure, with the opportunity for true cultural exchange intellectually and socially.  Please contact us if you need more information: slp@wadh.ox.ac.uk
