Sarah Lawrence Exchange Programme
Each year, a small number of Wadham students are selected to go on exchange to the United States, spending nearly three weeks during the spring vacation at Sarah Lawrence College.
During their three week stay in the US, Wadham undergraduate students take classes at Sarah Lawrence College, while working on a specific project of their choice. Wadham graduate students undertake relevant research. It is a wonderful adventure, with the opportunity for true cultural exchange intellectually and socially.Email us for more details
The New York Exchange is a complement to the Wadham College Visiting Student Programme, one of the oldest study programmes abroad in Oxford. Each year Wadham accepts up to 30 students from top US liberal arts colleges under the auspices of the Sarah Lawrence at Oxford Programme.
Exchange programme details
Wadham and Sarah Lawrence hope to select five undergraduate students and one graduate student to participate in the exchange each year.
Undergraduate Student Projects
Projects carried out in New York should be based on individual interest, and not necessarily related to the student's course of study. We are looking for creative, well thought through projects, which are able to be managed productively within the time period.
Graduates will not be regular participants in undergraduate classes at Sarah Lawrence nor will they complete an independent project. Instead they will spend their time engaged in research relating to their studies and interacting with Sarah Lawrence faculty. Applicants will therefore need to demonstrate a need to be in New York to complete research and/or a particular connection between their studies and a member of the Sarah Lawrence faculty.
Accommodation and travel
Wadham students will live in dorms or houses with Sarah Lawrence students in order to mix and integrate into College life, experiencing liberal arts education. There are also many opportunities for travel and visits to New York City, which is only 15 miles from Sarah Lawrence College.
Airfare costs to and from New York, and room and board at Sarah Lawrence College are provided, as well as a contribution to spending money. Costs are covered jointly by Sarah Lawrence College and Wadham College.
Making an application
Places are advertised at the end of Michaelmas Term and applications are due at the beginning of Hilary Term. Candidates will be short listed and interviews held shortly thereafter. The application form is available for download below. Applications close on Friday 13 January 2017.
Selection will be based on two criteria: the viability and potential of the study project or research, as well as the suitability of the candidate to serve as an ambassador. We are looking for students who will both represent Wadham well in New York and help to integrate the Sarah Lawrence Programme into Oxford.
