WCBS member Simon Evans (1978, Chemistry) describes the day:
“The day kicked off as WCBS members met at the boathouse on the Isis to relive former glories, catch up with friends old and new, and to overindulge in the amazing cakes provided by Social Secretary Lucy Ventress (2005, Physics). Such is the esteem in which this event is held, two members turned up with their own boats – Pete Berners-Lee (1976, Physics) in his inflatable kayak and Sam Howison (1976, Mathematics) in his home made coracle!
The regatta was well attended and keenly contested, and there were even rumours of clandestine practising – something the Committee will firmly stamp out in future years.
The winning crew was:
Cox: Jess Gillard (2013, Medicine)
Stroke: Robin Wilson
3: James Fotherby (2010, Physics)
2: Rachel Anderson (2012, Biochemistry)
Bow: Lia Orlando (2012, Medicine)
Many congratulations to them.
Once the fun on the river was concluded, all headed back to College with great anticipation of the President’s dinner. After the traditional meeting at the Kings Arms, the party moved into the Old Library where a fine meal was enjoyed. Sconcing (drinking a tankard of ale) according to the precise instructions form the Society founder Vere Ducker took place, re-establishing some of the rules that have changed over the decades.
Friendships were cemented as the party moved to the bar where celebrations went on late into the night. If you missed out this year due to the restriction on numbers, watch out for the announcement of the 2015 event and get your booking in early!”
