Carols by candlelight

8th December 2015

News, Student news, Alumni news

Outstanding harmonies from the Wadham Chapel Choir were a highlight of the carols by candlelight services for Wadham students and alumni.

Wadham alumni and their families returned to College for the annual service of nine lessons and carols led by College Chaplain, Wendy Wale.

The readers were Bob Carnell (Classics, 1954),  Lorna Carter, Noel Kershaw (English, 1955), John Carr (Mathematics, 1969), Victoria Harper (PPE, 1976), Duncan Enright (Physics, 1982),  Liz Gresham (Chemistry, 1991), Sandy Kilpatrick (Chemistry, 2005) and Fellow and Tutor in Modern History, Jane Garnett.

Some 300 students and their guests attended a service the previous week marking the start of the festive season.

Despite wind and rain, visitors were queuing around the front quad to be assured of a seat at the service.

The nine lessons were read by Laura Martin, Chapel Warden; Linnea Jacobsson, MCR President; Taisie Tsakis, SU President; Dr Christina Howells, Wadham Fellow; Julia Banfield, Head of Website and Communications; Cameron Hendrson-Begg, Chapel Choir Member; Dan Harkin, Sub-Dean; Rachel Nethercott, Wadham finalist; and Ken Macdonald QC, Warden.

The choir was led by Katharine Pardee, Director of Chapel Music and accompanied by Julian Littlewood, Organist.

The retiring collections go to the Gatehouse Cafe which provides food, shelter and care for Oxford's homeless and where a number of Wadham members work as volunteers and for Cara, a charity that supports academics fleeing violence and war-torn countries.

The services were followed by mulled wine, mince pies and refreshments in Hall.
