Edible exhibits brought to lifeNews
Illustrations by Wadham’s Librarian, Tim Kirtley, feature in a new historical cookbook on the cakes and confections of the past.
“I knew that if I ever wrote it up, I would like it to have Tim’s illustrations in it,” says former Oriel College Librarian and author of Sweet Slices of History, Marjory Szurko.
Sweet Slices of History takes the reader from the courtly cuisine of the fourteenth century, through to the country house confections of the early twentieth.
After becoming Librarian at Oriel, Marjory discovered a recipe book, presented by an alumnus of the College, Stephen Furness.
The book – a compilation of recipes used by Stephen’s mother at their country house in Yorkshire – formed the basis of a series of ‘Edible Exhibitions,’ that Marjory put on at the College.
The success of these inspired Marjory to write a book, to give others a way to recreate the delicacies of the past.
“I was delighted that Marjory asked me to do a few drawings depicting one of her edible exhibitions,” says Tim.” I hope that they have captured something of the atmosphere of these wonderful events,” he adds.
Sweet Slices of History is published on 14 November by Prospect Books and is available to order now.
