Swinging for victory

A squally day, courtesy of storm Bronagh, did not disrupt the action on the golf course as Wadham alumni competed for the prized Whitby Cup.

Fourteen players took part in the Whitby Cup 2018 competition at Temple Golf Club in Berkshire, as Wadham Alumni Golf Society's Richard Chapman reports

“The winner on the day, and new holder of the Whitby Cup, is Nigel Cook (Law, 1970) with a score of 37 points, closely followed by two players on 36 points, Geoff Green and Peter Lennon.

“Martin Cofield (the College groundsman) and Hywel Davies completed the top five places, with 34 and 33 points respectively. Of the rest, 27 points was very popular with five players registering that score.

“After the golf 13 players went back to College for drinks in the Trapp Room followed by a dinner with what all considered an exceptionally well-prepared menu.

“The College very kindly provided prizes for first place (Nigel) and second place (won by Peter on countback) and for "nearest the pin", won by Jim Congleton at the 5th hole.

“Many participants were staying in College and after dinner we repaired until closing time to the King's Arms to discuss the finer points of how we could have played better.

“The first WAGS fixture for 2019 is the Intercollegiate event on Friday 12th April. The Whitby Cup will be held in September at a date and venue to be finalised. Any golfers wanting to play in either event please contact the Development Office.”
