Galina is studying for a DPhil in Organic Chemistry and her research interests lie in synthetic organic chemistry and the contribution this science can make to the fields of medicine and natural products synthesis.
She is currently exploring a potential anti-cancer drug using a substance which is extracted from from the digestive glands of the scallop, patinopecten yessoensis. Her research group, led by Professor Tim J. Donohoe concentrates on developing new catalytic reactions and methodologies for synthetic organic chemistry and then employing chemistry to make biologically important natural products.
Galina did her Masters in Chemistry at Durham University and it is here she says she learned how to fly, but is spreading her wings now she is at Oxford.
She is confident that with the help of her strong committee, building on the legacy left by Paula Kaanders and her team, the MCR has an exciting year ahead.
“We have made a change in the constitution to make it easier to become an associate member of the MCR which will make us more inclusive and allow new ideas to flourish,” she said.
Plans for the future include organising a black tie charity dinner and furthering the MCR relationship with Wadham alumni, the SCR and JCR.
When not in the lab or the MCR, Galina can sometimes be found down by the river rowing for Wadham and her hobbies include sightseeing, photography and horse riding.
