The Dorothy Wadham building, comprising 137 ensuite student flats set around a central courtyard garden, will be managed by Resident Operations Manager, Melissa Lyon.
Melissa joined Wadham in May and has since been preparing for the building opening by shadowing Wadham teams in Parks Road and at Merifield, the graduate student accommodation site in Summertown. She has been busy appointing a team of eight scouts and a Deputy Housekeeper to help keep the facilities clean and a maintenance person to keep everything functioning properly.
“As well as ensuring the facilities are running smoothly I will be here for the students and am planning a round of kitchen visits in the first couple of weeks where I can get to know them properly. Their Bod cards will give them building access and they have secure lockers for post so they can be very independent but I will be here if there is a problem,” she said.
Melissa is introducing a comprehensive recycling scheme for the building – “I am anti land fill so am determined to make sure as much waste as possible is recycled.”
Two live-in sub-deans will support Melissa on the student welfare front, with back up from the team at the Parks Road site.
Originally from Dublin, Melissa has been running student accommodation facilities in London since she left school. She is excited to be based in Oxford and has been delighted by the very high standard of Wadham’s accommodation building.
“These rooms are hotel standard with beautiful bathrooms and fabulous kitchens and there is already a pool table and TVs in the garden room.”
Designed by Allies and Morrison and built by Gilbert Ash, the Dorothy Wadham building provides accommodation for Wadham’s second year students.
