We discovered that some students were choosing to wear sub-fusc for their remote exams to help get them into the right frame of mind
Among the 2021 Final Honours successes are Wadham students in Engineering where five out of eight finalists achieved Firsts; in History, where seven out of 15 were awarded Firsts; in Medicine, where three out of five students gained Firsts; in Physics, where there were four Firsts out of six students; and in Oriental Studies, where there were an exceptional eight Firsts out of nine students.
Senior Tutor Dr Michael Froggatt commentes: “The last couple of years have been particularly challenging for these students and we are delighted to see they have achieved such extraordinary results despite the pandemic and the difficulties it has presented. All those who were sitting Finals, or any other exams, in such exceptional circumstances can feel justly proud of their achievements.”
Due to social distancing measures, the overwhelming majority of students sat their exams online; by Trinity Term most had returned to Oxford and sat their exams in their bedrooms here, whilst others completed their assessments at home, whether in the UK or abroad.
However, not all Oxford exam traditions were abandoned completely. “We discovered that some students were choosing to wear sub-fusc for their remote exams to help get them into the right frame of mind while others donned sub-fusc when they emerged from exams in order to celebrate with friends,” added Mike.
“We were very grateful to the whole College community who were respectful of the number of students taking exams on the College site, keeping noise levels to a minimum throughout the exam period,” he commented.
End of term schools dinners took place for approximately half Wadham finalists until a surge in Covid cases resulting from the Delta variant meant celebrations had to be cancelled and students were encouraged to get tested and return home.
Graduation ceremonies, with more limited numbers, are due to resume in September 2021 and we look forward to welcoming recent finalists back to College and the Sheldonian to celebrate their results and receive their degrees.
