Climate Quiz win for Wadham students

3rd March 2021

News, Student news

Wadham College students have won first place among Oxford Colleges in a national climate quiz sustainability campaign, organised by Student Switch Off.

The climate quiz, launched on 9 February 2021, engages students with a quiz about sustainability issues. Wadham came second among halls and colleges in this national competition, winning Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream vouchers for participants.

Wadham’s participation was thanks to the efforts and encouragement of SU Environment and Ethics Officer, Freddie Seddon (Ancient and Modern History, 2019).

“The quiz was short, consisting of only six questions, and tested students on their knowledge of energy-saving and climate-friendly adjustments in daily life, such as putting lids on cooking pots, as well as current climate movements, such as Greta Thunberg's Fridays for Future strikes and the rise of plant-based lifestyles,” comments Freddie. “We started mobilising with only three days until the deadline, which goes to show what Wadham's capable of when we pull together!”

The Climate Quiz is part of the Student Switch Off campaign to support and encourage students to take actions to increase their positive environmental impact, from saving energy and recycling, to reducing plastic-use and lobbying for bigger changes.

The college that does the best over the year is announced as the Student Switch Off winner, receiving an end-of-year prize. A Student Switch Off week of action is currently underway, running masterclasses, training sessions and competitions all aimed at improving the sustainability of our environment and encouraging students to get involved.

Student Switch Off is also running a free webinar on Creating Change for Sustainability on 9 March that students can register to join using the registration form here.
