It is with great sadness that we share the news of Jeremy’s death. He died comfortably in his sleep surrounded by family.

Jeremy Montagu, Emeritus Fellow

Jeremy Montagu, was curator of the Bate Collection of Musical Instruments and lecturer in the University of Oxford (1981-95), Faculty of Music.

In addition to building up a major collection of instruments, world-wide and representing all periods from prehistoric to the present, Jeremy Montagu lectured and taught in the United Kingdom and America.  He was an advisor on musical intruments to museums and arts bodies and has written extensively.

Jeremy played percussion with most of the major London orchestras (including the Royal Philharmonic with Beecham).

He was a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries and President of the Galpin Society (the major international society for the study of musical instruments).
