Biography

Dr. Otared Haidar is a full Faculty-member of the Academic and research staff at the Department of the Islamic World and Middle East Studies, University of Oxford, teaches Arabic and Arabic Media at the NMES sub-faculty and lecturer in Arabic at Wadham College, University of Oxford.

Otared has lectured at several other universities and institutions including the Institute of Ismaili Studies (IIS London) and the University of London.

She completed her D. Phil Degree at the Oriental Institute, University of Oxford in 2005. Her doctoral research thesis was published by Ithaca in 2008 in a book titled The Prose Poem and the Shi’r Journal: a Comparative Study of Literature, Literary Theory and Journalism.

She has a BA in English Literature, (Damascus University 1988) and a BA in Drama and Criticism (the Academy of Arts, Damascus 1990). In 1997 she completed the Post-Graduate Program in Islamic Studies and Humanities (GPISH) at IIS London, and continued her study at Oxford University where she obtained a Masters in Modern Middle Eastern Studies in 1998. In 2005 she completed a Post-Graduate Diploma in Education at Oxford University and she is now a fellow of the Higher Education Academy in UK.

Dr. Haidar worked as a consultant and a lecturer at IIS London, where she designed, and lectured in, several courses including Modern and Classical Arabic literature for GPISH, and the Narrative: Theory and Practice for STEP. She has presented academic papers at international conferences and published many articles in Academic journals. She is working now on a book about “the Contribution of Minorities to the Arab enlightenment Movement in Syria and Lebanon” and a Chapter on “Syrian Ismailis and the Arab Spring” that will be published by Routledge. She is an editor in Damascus Centre which is part the Euro-Meditteranean Network of Human rights and she is a member of the British Association of writers.
