Alumni get behind Brentford FC

Nearly 40 Wadham alumni were in the stands to cheer the Brentford Bees to a 2-0 victory over West Ham.

It’s not often that dozens of Wadham alumni have a chance to make it onto the BBC’s Match of the Day but on 10 April, nearly 40 were in the stands to cheer the Brentford Bees to a 2-0 victory over West Ham.

Attendance was made possible thanks to the incredible generosity of Wadham alumnus and Foundation Fellow, Matthew Benham (Physics, 1986), who owns the club.

Unfortunately, Matthew was unable to join the event due to Covid, but he treated alumni to a fantastic pre-match lunch and drinks reception. There, Phil Whall (Botany, 1985), CEO of SmartOdds and Director of Brentford FC, along with fellow Brentford Director Nity Raj, provided insights into the science of sports gambling. They shared how this background has helped inform the good decision making that has enabled Matthew and the Board to build Brentford FC into the Premier League club that it is today.

Warden Robert Hannigan said, “It was a terrific atmosphere, a fantastic stadium, and our group appreciated the entire opportunity. Our deepest thanks to Matthew, Phil, Nity and their colleagues for such a wonderful opportunity and experience.”
