Date Published: 14.08.2024
Syed Refaat Ahmed has been sworn in as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh.
Our alumnus is a Bangladeshi lawyer and jurist. He read Law at Wadham, graduating in 1985, before going on to complete a Masters and PhD at The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy of Tufts University. Chief Justice Ahmed was previously a judge of the High Court and was sworn in as Bangladesh’s new Chief Justice on 11 August 2024 by President Mohammed Shahabuddin.
Following his appointment, Chief Justice Ahmed commemorated those killed in the student protests that resulted in the toppling of the government led by Sheikh Hasina. He spoke of his determination to establish justice in society and warned of stern action against 'misdeeds' by judiciary.
We congratulate Chief Justice Ahmed and wish him well in this crucial role.
