The Nature-based Solutions Initiative, founded by our Senior Research Fellow, Professor Nathalie Seddon, will advance its work further with a new partnership with the Smith School.

The Nature-based Solutions Initiative is an international and interdisciplinary team of natural and social scientists, mathematicians and economists. The team seeks to apply impactful research to shape policy and practice on nature-based solutions through research, teaching and engagement with policymakers and practitioners.

NbSI collaborates with with engineers, governance and finance experts from across the University of Oxford and beyond, and works closely with international and local NGOs from the conservation and development sectors.

Professor Nathalie Seddon founded the team in 2017. She now leads NbSI under both the Smith School (in the Department of Geography) and the Department of Biology.

A healthy biodiverse natural world is the foundation of a thriving economy, so I’m delighted to continue my work on nature-based solutions alongside Smith School colleagues in economics, finance, law and other disciplines. By strengthening our work together, we can help answer the urgent questions raised by climate change and biodiversity loss, identify holistic, equitable and genuinely sustainable solutions to these crises, and in so doing transform the economy so that is in service of life, rather than its unravelling.
