Wadham's Volunteer Gardening Group starts work
Date Published: 30.01.2026
Students and staff work with our Gardens Team on improving Wadham's grounds.
Starting from Hilary term, College members are invited to join Head Gardener, David, and his team for fortnightly gardening sessions.
The volunteers will help the gardeners to make raised beds and turn compost, while learning what can/can’t be composted in a college setting. They will be sowing seeds (vegetables, herbs, flowers); dividing perennials; making hotels for insects; maintaining log piles and maintaining wildflower areas. Time will be spent also on bird, insect and plant spotting, to record species in the gardens. The groups will learn about organic gardening principles – non-chemical pest control, companion planting, encouraging beneficial insects; supporting early pollinators; and lawn edging and care.
The first gardening group made two raised beds, as Assistant Gardener, Nick, describes. We look forward to seeing what they do next and how this benefits the College gardens. We'll also be catching up with the volunteers to find out what they've learned and gained from the experience.
