'25 April 1974: Unfinished Revolutions in Portuguese Literary and Visual Culture' was held at Wadham as part of our Easter Conference Series

A lively two-day conference, 'Unfinished Revolutions in Portuguese Literary and Visual Culture', was held at Wadham on 15 and 16 March 2024 ahead of the 50th anniversary of Portugal’s Carnation Revolution, which marked the country's return to democracy on 25 April 1974. The event took an intersectional approach to race and gender inequalities, exploring how these continue to play out to the present day.

Our guests of honour were the film directors, Raquel Freire and Luísa Sequeira. The UK premieres (with English subtitles) of the films Mulheres do meu País (dir) and O Que Podem as Palavras? were particular high points and generated animated discussions on Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion issues.

The conference was generously supported by Wadham College, the Camões Institute and the Faculty of Medieval and Modern Languages.
