Retained Lecturer in Clinical Medicine
The College proposes to appoint a Retained Lecturer in Clinical Medicine to support its clinical students (approx 5-6 students each year) in their three years of clinical study.
Job Description
The post is open to a practising senior clinician holding a position at consultant level or equivalent within the hospitals of the Oxford Medical School. The post holder will supervise the College's clinical medical students (usually about 15 in number) throughout their clinical course, acting as their graduate advisor. Duties will include pastoral care, advising students throughout their course, preparation of termly reports, advice on book and travel grants, and provision of bedside teaching - including coordination of the clinical teaching provided by the College's three Clinical Teaching Associates. It is expected that students in years 4 and 6 will receive regular bedside teaching in the clinic or hospital fortnightly during their clinical firm attachments whilst in Oxford. The post-holder will participate in the assessment of a mock clinical Finals exam (OSCE) with volunteer patients. The post-holder will assist the two Fellows and Tutors in Medicine in the admission of preclinical medical students to the College (again, 5-6 a year). Undergraduate admissions interviews are generally held on Monday and Tuesday of 10th week of Michaelmas Term (mid-December), with some preparation required in advance.
Wadham has an active 'Medical Society' which meets termly and serves to unite the current medical community and, at the annual and triennial meetings, strengthen links with the College's medical alumni. Although mostly student run, the postholder would be expected to help oversee its running and to contribute to the continued success of the society. It is expected, although not essential, that the postholder will be engaged in research or other scholarship.
Tenure
The retained post can be held with effect from 1 September 2026, or as soon as the preferred candidate is able to take up the post. Appointment will be for one probationary year in the first instance and will be tenable thereafter for so long as the College needs to provide this support to its clinical students, and provided that the postholder continues to employed at consultant level in Oxford.
Remuneration
The postholder will be paid a termly retainer (set at a sum equal to the termly rate for a single tutorial – currently £268) and may claim payment for teaching undertaken. The postholder will also be paid at the University’s stipulated hourly rate for undergraduate admissions interviewing. The lecturer will also be entitled to one free meal a week at Common Table from 0th to 9th week each term (when the kitchens are open) and to membership of the College’s Senior Common Room.
