Stipendiary Lectureship in German Language and Literature 1st September 2025 – 31st August 2026

The College proposes to appoint a part-time Stipendiary Lecturer in German for the 2025-26 academic year to support Professor Duttlinger, the College’s Fellow in German, while she is leading a major research grant.

This is a fixed-term contract, based at Wadham College. The lecturer will be required to give on average three hours per week of tutorials for Wadham College during the eight-week term, and to be available during both term and for some periods of the students’ vacation to offer organizational, pastoral, and admissions support. Together with the College’s other tutors in Modern Languages and Joint Schools, the lecturer will be expected to share pastoral and organizational responsibility for Wadham students reading German.

*Key duties include arranging teaching, setting and marking collections (college termly examinations), writing and authorizing reports, organizing and participating in subject social events, and arranging regular one-to-one meetings with undergraduates. They may also be expected to play a role in the undergraduate admissions process (finishing in mid-December), and they will accordingly be expected to participate in appropriate admissions training by the beginning of November 2025 if they have not already done so.

The lecturer will be expected to share responsibility for the teaching of German Literature in the college. The period to be covered ranges from the late eighteenth century to the present. This will/may involve the first-year literature and commentary papers (Papers III and IV) and, for the Final Honours School, the Modern Period Paper (Paper VIII) and those Special Authors (Paper X) which they are able to teach. While German grammar, conversation and essay writing are taught centrally, the ability to teach translation either into or out of German would be an advantage.

The current undergraduate handbooks in German are available as PDF files on request (please email tutorial@wadham.ox.ac.uk). This link provides general information about German at the University of Oxford and about the syllabus: http://www.mod-langs.ox.ac.uk/german.

*As well as the main Honour School of Modern Languages the college admits students in English and Modern Languages, History and Modern Languages, Philosophy and Modern Languages, European and Middle Eastern Languages, Linguistics and Modern Languages, and Classics and Modern Languages. (We are expecting 12 students reading German within Modern Languages, including joint schools, to be in residence 2025-26.)
