Safeguarding our tutorial system

The tutorial system is rightly treasured by students and alumni. Your support can help future generations benefit from this most powerful and ‘life changing’ element of an Oxford education.

Our challenge

  • The tutorial model requires high levels of investment, and fee income covers just half the cost of delivering it.
  • Living as a community is important. We offer subsidised accommodation and facilities to students that are far better value than student halls of residence provided elsewhere in the country.
  • Wadham currently has one of the largest undergraduate populations, so the funding needed to deliver individualised teaching, in a well-preserved historic environment, is significant.

“How are students going to be prepared for the challenges of this century – from pandemics to disinformation to climate change to rising authoritarianism and even violent effects of AI and other technologies – if they have not had their curiosity piqued, their ideas tested, their imaginations lit, and their inner compasses set through the unique growth that happens intellectually and morally in the tutorial system?”

Lissa Muscatine (1977, European Politics)

The impact

In an era of limitless information flows and a crisis of trust in content, tutorials offer challenge and rigorous intellectual discipline. In the coming decades, this model will be ever more critical to the success of Wadham students in the world. Your support can safeguard this life-changing educational model for generations to come.
