Summary

A two-day conference to mark the 50th anniversary of Portugal’s Carnation Revolution of 25 April 1974 as part of the Wadham Easter conference series 2024.

The conference will evaluate the cultural and political legacies of the Carnation Revolution which brought an end to Europe's longest dictatorship, ushering in a return to democratic government, and belated independence for Portugal’s African colonies. This event will take an intersectional approach to race and gender inequalities, and explore how these continue to play out to the present day in Portuguese literature and film. There will be UK premieres (with English subtitles) of the films Mulheres do meu País (dir Raquel Freire) and O Que Podem as Palavras? (dir Luísa Sequeira and Luísa Marinho).
