Summary

Considering postgraduate studies? Wadham is proud to welcome Dr Marcy McCall MacBain and Ms Julia Lo, visiting from the McCall MacBain Scholarships in Canada, for a conversation with Oxford students about philanthropy, leadership development, and postgraduate study opportunities.

Dr Marcy McCall MacBain is Chair of the McCall MacBain Scholarships at McGill and Vice-Chair of the McCall MacBain Foundation, and a Bynum Tudor Fellow at Kellogg College. Originally from rural Ontario, Canada, she holds a BKin (Hons) from McMaster University, a MSc in International Health Policy from the London School of Economics and Political Science, a DPhil in Evidence-Based Health Care from the University of Oxford, and an honorary doctorate from Monash University. Her academic areas of interest include the effective management and prevention of chronic diseases, especially applying mixed methodologies to improve the knowledge-base and implementation of self-care health strategies.

In 2007, John and Marcy McCall MacBain founded the McCall MacBain Foundation. The Foundation’s assets are derived from the proceeds of the sale of Trader Classified Media, the world’s leading company in classified advertising. To date, the Foundation has committed over $400 million to initiatives in education and scholarships, climate change and the environment, and health. The Foundation is Second Century Founder of the Rhodes Trust and has provided dedicated study space and scholarships for Wadham students.

In 2019, the Foundation made a record-breaking $200 million donation to found the McCall MacBain Scholarships at McGill, Canada’s most comprehensive leadership-based scholarships for master’s and professional studies. McCall MacBain Scholars connect with mentors and participate in an interdisciplinary leadership programme while pursuing a funded degree at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

Julia Lo is the Director of Marketing, Communications and Recruitment for the McCall MacBain Scholarships. She oversees the scholarship application process, working with participating universities and other stakeholders to support candidates. A graduate of the University of Toronto and HEC Montréal, she has more than a decade of experience working with youth leadership and civic engagement organisations.

Sarah Gaspard is in the final year of her DPhil in English Literature at Oxford, where she researches intertwinements between depictions of mental illness and violence in postwar American and British fiction. She also presently works as a study advisor at Wadham College. She is originally from Montréal, Canada, and before coming to Oxford, she completed both an MA and a BA in English Literature at Concordia University, and a BA&Sc in Cognitive Science (psychology, neuroscience, and philosophy streams) at McGill University. She will be delighted to talk to you about her experience studying at McGill, and looks forward to answering any questions you may have.
