In 1991 the commercialisation of the lithium-ion battery sparked a revolution in rechargeable technology, ushering in the age of portable electronics. Today, batteries are everywhere, from bike lights to busses, and modern technology requires ever-improving performance. The key polymeric components in commercial batteries are not sufficient to meet current demand for energy density, long-term performance, and safety. Introducing multifunctional polymers that combat these issues is a key target when designing batteries for the future.
