Access Summer School 2022

Date Published: 22.08.2022

Wadham was delighted to host our 2022 residential summer school for Year 12 pupils.

Once again this August, we were delighted to welcome year 12 pupils for our annual five-day residential summer schools in Modern Languages and Classics.

These courses, which have been made possible thanks to the generosity of alumni, have become a welcome fixture of our summer calendar. We have many applications for each place, and they have proven to be a fantastic way to give a taste of the real Oxford experience to pupils from across the country. Last year alone, almost three-quarters of our Summer School participants ended up applying to Oxford.

This year's Summer Schools ran from August 15-19, hosting 32 pupils from UK schools.

Participants were taught by Wadham tutors, prepared essays for Oxford-style tutorials, and had access to undergraduate spaces for free time, like the JCR common room.

They also had time talking about student life with current student ambassadors, some of whom went through the Summer School programme themselves.

Dr Hugh Munro, Acting Tutor for Access, commented: "It’s always a pleasure to run our Summer Schools and meet pupils from all over the UK. The week aims to give them a taste of what it’d be like to be a student here and its been encouraging to see how successful the week is in equipping participants to make competitive applications to Oxford.

"Impressively, 13 of the participants from the 2021 Summer Schools will be starting courses at Oxford this term, 6 at Wadham. It’s also been really powerful to have student ambassadors helping out on Summer Schools who were participants a few years before and can share their experiences with the pupils.”

Many thanks also to our generous donors who make this programme possible. If you'd like to support our Access work, please visit this link.

This was only the second year in-person, using the new Locke Access Centre in the Dr Lee Shau Kee Building.

"Spending the week with like-minded people also studying languages has been really enjoyable. It has really given me a sense of what being a student at Oxford would be like."
