Many congratulations to our alumnus, Chris Mitchell, and his wife Denise, who are among 26 exceptional individuals to have been honoured with the British Citizen Award at the Palace of Westminster on 22 January.

Over four decades, Chris and Denise have shown care, compassion and provided a safe, loving environment to disabled babies. The award celebrates their outstanding contributions to society.

The couple first adopted three children with Down's syndrome, welcoming them to their family with their two sons. They went on to foster newborn babies straight from hospital as a way to continue to help children into families. Over a 14-year period, they fostered 12 vulnerable children, many with complex medical needs.

The presentation, hosted by TV and Radio presenter Konnie Huq, was attended by BCA Patrons Dame Mary Perkins, Founder of Specsavers, and The Lord Mott. Dame Mary said: ‘Chris and Denise are true unsung heros and a shining example of what it means to be community champions. Their positive impact embodies real citizenship and shows just how powerful local action can be'.

Chris came to Wadham as an undergraduate in 1974. He credits his time at Oxford and at Wadham with enhancing his sense of community. While studying here, he worked on Oxford Nightline and was Chair of OxMent, its then mental health society.

Chris said: "We went to the presentation and it was just phenomenal - the back stories of all the folks who have done such a lot for the community and society at large. We are very humbled."

"But equally what would be so great is if anybody hearing this picks up either the phone or writes to Derbyshire County Council and gets information about doing this for their own family for the benefit of other young people."

Sam Redfern, Derbyshire County Council's cabinet member for children and families, said that Chris and Denise are an "inspiration". We agree wholeheartedly. Huge congratulations to them both!
