Earthquakes in Turkey and Syria

Date Published: 13.02.2023

Our thoughts and sympathy are with everyone affected by the recent terrible events in Turkey and Syria. We have encouraged members of our College community to reach our to the welfare services available to provide support to staff and students who are in need of it at this time. Information about the University’s response, as well as further advice and support for staff and students impacted, and a list of organisations contributing to relief efforts compiled by University members can be found on the University website.

Mert Ayik, a first-year Law student at Wadham, has shared the following communication on behalf of a group of Turkish students about ways in which we can support the emergency response efforts:

As Turkish students at Oxford, we wanted to draw the attention of our community to the dire situation and mobilize joint efforts to remotely help all those affected. For this purpose, we are listing some reliable NGOs and initiatives which individuals might consider donating to. The initiatives listed below are providing humanitarian assistance on the ground and the funds they collect go towards the coordination/facilitation of rescue efforts, as well as providing the victims with some essentials such as warm clothes, food and health supplies.

AFAD is the official disaster and emergency management authority of Turkey. They accept donations in EUR and USD.

AHBAP is a reputable civil society initiative – its volunteers are currently active in the affected region. They accept donations in GBP. Bank details for donations are as follows:

Account Name: Ahbap Dernegi

SWIFT Code: ISBKTRIS

IBAN No: TR370006400000210212260849

AKUT is a well-established NGO aiming to search and rescue earthquake victims. They accept donations in EUR and USD.

BRITISH RED CROSS is collecting donations for humanitarian relief in the region.

OXFAM launched a campaign to support the victims.

Even a small contribution would have a big impact - for reference, as of 6th February 2023;

£1.00 = TRY 22.63

$1.00 = TRY 18.83

€1.00 = TRY 20.18.

Thank you for considering this.
