New bioprinting research from Wadham’s Alfonso Castrejón-Pita will allow scientists to recreate complex biological scenarios, such as niches where cancer grows, to study disease and develop drugs.
OxVent wins Global Challenge award

OxVent, the ventilator designed by Wadham academics to help treat COVID-19, has won the Engineering and Technology Innovation Global Challenge Award 2020.
The rapidly deployable and scalable low-cost mechanical ventilator was specially designed for Covid-19 by a multi-disciplinary Oxford University team led by Wadham Fellows Professors Andrew Farmery, Mark Thompson and Alfonso Castrejon-Pita working with Wadham Visiting Fellow Dr Federico Formenti of King’s College London.

Covid-19 paved the way for new collaborations and out-of-the-box thinking. The awards celebrate the innovators who found new ways to support the government, society and individuals who need help during the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak.
The multidisciplinary team from Oxford and King’s College London, and manufacturers Smith+Nephew, were shortlisted in the Global Challenge category of the Engineering and Technology Innovation Awards. Among the six finalists in this category are an AI enabled, low-cost digital stethoscope; chewing gum for COVID-19 testing; and an autonomous ambulance.
