We are saddened to learn of the death of our alumnus and Honorary Fellow.
Peter James Marshall FBA CBE (1933-2025) studied Modern History at Wadham 1954-1957. A greatly respected historian and expert on British imperial history, he published a series of important books, as well as more than fifty articles and chapters over the course of his long career.
After completing his DPhil at Wadham, Professor Marshall joined King's College, London, as Assistant Lecturer in 1959. In 2009, the Department of History celebrated his 50th year of teaching there. He held the position of Rhodes Professor of Imperial History at King's from 1980–1993.
Professor Marshall was President of the Royal Historical Society 1996–2000. He was was elected to the Fellowship of the British Academy in 1992 and, in 2002, he was awarded a CBE for services to history. His final book Slave Ownership and Paternalist. Sir William Young (1749-1815) in England and the Caribbean will be published posthumously by Boydell and Brewer.
