Season's Greetings from Wadham
Date Published: 09.12.2024
As 2024 nears its end, we celebrated the festive season with an afternoon of carols by candlelight.
Wadham Choir sings in the Chapel at our Alumni Carol Service.
Strong winds, rain and cold temperatures couldn’t deter over one hundred alumni and their families and friends from participating in and enjoying Wadham’s exquisite annual Alumni Carol Service in Chapel on 8 December.
The candlelit atmosphere exuded tranquility and festivity for attendees young and old, and the rousing, perennial favourites left everyone elated and edified – and ready for mince pies and mulled wine, which followed in Hall.
We are grateful to the wonderful Wadham Chapel Choir; Jamie Powe, who stood in as Director of Music for Hannah Zaki; Julian Littlewood, Chapel Organist; Joseph Morgan, Trumpeter; Jane Baun, College Chaplain; and our Lesson Readers. We are also grateful to Ross Hutchison (Philosophy & Modern Languages, 1979) for so generously funding the event this year.
As we reflect on the past year and look forward to the next, we are filled, as always, with pride at the academic achievements and contributions to College life of our community members. Our Warden, Robert Hannigan, shares his thoughts with our alumni here:
As a busy Michaelmas Term comes to a close, it is with great pride that I read through the Christmas issue of Wadham Connects and reflect on all the exceptional achievements of our extended College community. With so much happening in Oxford and beyond, it is impossible to capture everything, but I hope you will get a sense of the variety and depth of activity from all corners, with students, Fellows, and alumni accomplishing great things in many spheres. I am so pleased to see our Wadham fellowship evolve with the election of six new Fellows and Junior Research Fellows and delighted that the students continue to thrive both academically and in their contributions to cultural life in the College. And it is of course very satisfying to learn about the many, many accomplishments of our alumni community across the world, and think about how they may, to some degree, be traced back to time spent in this special place.
It was a pleasure to see so many of you at the Christmas Carol concert on Sunday. If you didn’t manage to join us, please enjoy this short medley of music performed by our wonderful choir.
Wishing you and your families the best for the festive season and a happy 2025,
Robert Hannigan, Warden
We hope to see many of you at Wadham in 2025. Please keep up with our news and forthcoming events. We hope that you will join us at some of them.
