Supporting African Scholars

The College was delighted to bring scholars from Kenya, Nigeria, Zimbabwe, Malawi, South Africa and Ghana together.

On the evening of Wednesday 30 November, the Warden hosted a reception for students on our African Scholarship programmes in the Lodgings. The College was delighted to have an opportunity to bring scholars from Kenya, Nigeria, Zimbabwe, Malawi, South Africa and Ghana together to enjoy a festive drink and make connections.

At the end of their first term in Oxford, the scholars were able to swap experiences of life at Wadham and their studies on a variety of courses, including Archaeology, Engineering, Public Policy, Immunology and Education. After drinks, attendees moved on for High Table Dinner in Hall followed by desert in the Old Library. It was a warm atmosphere and hopefully the first of many such occasions sharing stories and research outcomes with peers & Fellows.

As part of Wadham's Access to Excellence vision, the College is proud to host scholars on programmes funded by the FirstRand Foundation, the Beit Trust and Standard Bank. We are extremely grateful to our funders for making this possible. In 2023, two new scholarships - in Public Policy (Blavatnik School of Government) and Sustainability, Enterprise and the Environment (Smith School) - will be added to the FirstRand programme, and we have ambitious plans for increasing scholarship provision in the future. We hope to continue to build on these important links to the African continent in the years ahead.
