Wadham's Rare Isaac Newton Collection

Date Published: 18.03.2024

Prof Rob Iliffe presents our first edition Principia Mathematica, and other treasures, in our new library film.

Among the extraordinary treasures in Wadham's library collections are a number of early Isaac Newton publications. Some were published during Newton's lifetime and some shortly after. Presenting the collection in this new video is Rob Iliffe, Professor of History of Science at the University of Oxford. Prof Iliffe has written multiple works on Newton, including A Very Short Introduction to Newton (OUP 2007) and Priest of Nature: the Religious Worlds of Isaac Newton, (OUP 2017), and co-editing The Cambridge Companion to Isaac Newton, 2nd ed. (CUP, 2016).

Prof Iliffe takes the viewer through Wadham's collection, placing it in the context of Newton's life and accomplishments, starting with our own first edition copy of Principia Mathematica, published in 1687. The video was carefully edited by Wadham's own librarian, Tim Kirtley, with accompanying images and illustrations. Enjoy.
