Working with Food Rescuers Oxford

Date Published: 16.02.2024

Our students are helping people experiencing homelessness in Oxford while also reducing food waste.

Food Rescuers Oxford is a student-run society that distributes leftover food from Oxford colleges to the homeless. In Michaelmas term, the team distributed 318 meals that were donated by Wadham College. On Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday in term time, they collect leftover lunch meals from Wadham and give them directly to homeless people, along with wooden cutlery. This lets those experiencing homelessness have a warm good-quality meal whilst reducing food waste, and enables students to engage with the homeless community.

Wadham students play an active role in the society. Ellen Appleby, a third-year medical student, is the president. Lucy Kim is the head of volunteering and is a third-year chemist. Sebastian Leeming is the head of external relations and is also a third-year chemist.

We are very proud of our students' efforts to help people experiencing homelessness in Oxford and are glad to support their efforts by donating surplus food from the College. Follow Food Rescuers Oxford on Instagram to find out more.
