Andrew Farmery

Professor of Anaesthetics in the Nuffield Department of Clinical Neurosciences

Biography

Andrew Farmery came to Wadham in 2004 from a fellowship at another college, after having combined both clinical and research training in London, Cambridge and Oxford. He is the main tutor in Pre-clinical Medicine at Wadham.

Andrew leads a team of five college fellows & lecturers who together provide tutorial teaching in Physiology, Pharmacology, Anatomy, Biochemistry, Pathology and Neuroscience for our 5-6 Medicine undergraduates in each year. His own teaching is in the Physiology & Pharmacology of the systems of the body. He is Head of the Nuffield Department of Anaesthetics in the University of Oxford Medical School, and a practising Consultant at the John Radcliffe Hospital, and, and so aims to direct students' learning in ways that encourage an understanding of how scientific principles apply to real clinical problems.

Andrew’s research group works in the area of biomedical engineering, developing novel intravascular sensors and analytical techniques to detect and monitor disordered physiology of the respiratory and cardiovascular systems in the critically ill. It is funded by the Wellcome Trust, the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council and the National Institute of Health Research.

Andrew is a fan of early music, particularly English and European renaissance polyphony, but considers himself “too rusty” to dare to perform any.  He keeps a small narrowboat in Port Meadow, and enjoys chugging up and down the Thames scaring the rowers.
