Bernhard Staresina

Tutorial Fellow in Psychology

Biography

Bernhard Staresina is Tutorial Fellow in Psychology and director of the Staresina lab, which investigates human memory formation and the role of sleep for learning.

Bernhard Staresina trained as an experimental psychologist in Vienna, New York, Cambridge and Stanford. He is Professor of Cognitive Neuroscience in the department of Experimental Psychology, where he heads a research lab focussed on understanding the neural and cognitive mechanisms that support learning and memory in humans (www.staresinalab.com). His group uses functional neuroimaging, electrophysiology and brain stimulation to elucidate the intricate mechanisms through which memories are formed, retained and forgotten. One particular research focus is the role of sleep for memory, using a dedicated sleep laboratory to measure brain activity during sleep and unveil how particular activity patterns strengthen our memories overnight.
