Jane Baun

College Chaplain

Biography

Jane joined Wadham as College Chaplain at Wadham in 2018, moving from Ripon College Cuddesdon, where she taught Ethics and Church History.

Prior to Cuddesdon, Jane was a Fellow of Greyfriars Hall, Oxford, and University Research Lecturer in Eastern Church History on the Oxford Theology Faculty.

Following doctoral study at Princeton, Jane taught early medieval and Byzantine history at New York University.  Transatlantic marriage and motherhood brought her to Oxford in 2002.  Her publications include Tales from Another Byzantium: Celestial Journey and Local Community in the Medieval Greek Apocrypha (Cambridge, 2007), and numerous articles probing the interface of ‘unofficial’ and ‘official’ belief and practice in medieval Orthodox religious culture.

Jane has sung in choirs on both sides of the Atlantic, as well as in Moscow, where she lived and worked 1984-85.  Qigong and Taiqi practice keep her grounded, and she loves travel, traditional and classical music, nature observation, and anything to do with the sea and boats.

Jane is ably assisted in her chaplaincy role by Maggie Mae, a very calm, highly intelligent and stubborn sheepdog-pointer cross who arrived in England from Bucharest in 2014.

Jane and Maggie Mae both love meeting new people, and look forward to making the rounds of Wadham, getting to know all 800+ members of College!
