Biography

Professor John T. P. LAI received his DPhil. (Oriental Studies) from Oxford (2005), and is currently Professor in the Department of Cultural and Religious Studies, The Chinese University of Hong Kong. He was a Visiting Scholar at the Harvard-Yenching Institute (2015–16), and now a Visiting Fellow at Wadham College, Oxford during his sabbatical leave (2022–23). His research interests focus on Religion and literature in China, Biblical reception in Chinese contexts, and Missionary Yijing (Book of Changes) studies. He has published more than ten books, including Negotiating Religious Gaps: The Enterprise of Translating Christian Tracts by Protestant Missionaries in Nineteenth-century China (2012), Literary Representations of Christianity in Late Qing and Republican China (2019), and An Annotated Anthology of the Yijing Commentaries by the Early Qing Jesuit Joachim Bouvet (2020).
