Leading UK scientists urge Prime Minister to place nature at the centre of economic and climate policy

Leading UK scientists, coordinated by our Senior Research Fellow in Biology and Nature-based Solutions Initiative Director, Professor Nathalie Seddon, have urged the Prime Minister to place nature at the centre of economic and climate policy.
The group of over 35 senior UK academics, from ecology, economics, public health and the social sciences, delivered an open letter to the Prime Minister setting out the latest peer-reviewed evidence on why protecting and restoring nature is essential for UK prosperity, security and global leadership as the world heads towards COP 30 (Belém, November 2025). Find out more and read the full letter.
Prof Seddon said:
“As mounting evidence shows, restoring forests, wetlands and urban green space delivers some of the best returns of any climate action—pulling carbon from the air, buffering communities against heat and floods, and enhancing everyday wellbeing. By making nature a cornerstone of its growth agenda ahead of COP 30, the UK can show that a strong economy and a healthy environment advance together, not at each other’s expense.”
The story was covered by Business Green highlighting the coalition’s evidence that nature-positive policy can drive growth while enhancing health and resilience.
